Is there a chance of failure in dental implants?
Dental implant technology has transformed the field of restorative dentistry in a major way. Prior to this technology, bridgework was used extensively as a tooth replacement procedure. But the disadvantage with bridgework is that it tends to weaken the healthy adjacent teeth which are used for support. Furthermore, bridgework is not as natural and long-lasting as a dental implant.
Dental implant treatment produces highly predictable results. It is a very safe and conservative procedure with a very high success rate. Dental implants have been in use for over 25 years and many of the early patients still continue to use their original implants without any problem. If the patient maintains good oral hygiene and is in good general health, along with periodic visits to the dentist, the dental implant may stay in place for life.
It can be safely said that the overall success rate of dental implants is over 90 percent.
Implant failure may occur if the bone does not integrate naturally with the implant. If there is an infection in the bone area, the implant may fail. However, it is possible to correct this condition by removing the implant and allowing the area to heal. Once it is fully healed, a new dental implant can be placed successfully in the same area.
In rare situations, the crown may fail where the implant attaches with the crown. It is also a correctable condition where the existing crown can be removed and replaced with a new crown.
A lot also depends on the skill of the operating dentist who places the implant. It is crucial that the dentist must have sufficient past experience and a successful track record of placing dental implants.
